The week through the eyes of a pupil

Mr Smith's Daily Blog

Mr Smith took part in one of our 'Train Like A Tour Pro' experiences - here's his account of the week:

Saturday: We flew at midday from London Heathrow and arrived in Lisbon around 3pm. After a short 30 minutes coach trip to the Penha Longa Resort, we were soon checked in to this fantastic hotel. I wandered around for a while to get my bearings before our welcome dinner at 8.00pm. We were introduced to the team and talked through the rest of the week. The pre-trip information was also very helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect. Roll on tomorrow!

Sunday: I woke up after a good night's sleep, and the room really lived up to a 5* standard. After a hearty breakfast, I was getting very excited about our 10.30am tee time on the Championship Atlantic course. It was an amazing golf course and it was simply so nice to be playing in the sun again. After a quick lunch we played another 9 hole on the Monastery course. Again it was of great conditions, and a bit more forgiving off the tee than the Atlantic. I think tomorrow will be harder work than today…

Monday: Assessment Day. Up early as I had an 8.20am fitness assessment in the gym followed by my video swing assessment at 10am. I spent an hour on the range before my individual golf consultation at 2pm with Richard and Andy. They gave me lots of positive things to think about. After another couple of hours on the range and in the short game area, a relaxing sauna in the spa was a perfect ending to a long hard working day. I found out about our group allocation and headed for an early night. I will be in the Gym at 8.00am tomorrow.

Tuesday: What a day that was! It started at 8.00am with a 1.5 hour fitness session, concentrating on conditioning muscles ready for golf. Just enough time for a quick shower before my first full coaching session with the Pro team. Today's focus was on the long game and very quickly I could feel some positive results. A very quick lunch as I couldn't wait to play. I also took advantage of the sport massage that included in the package. Excellent day and now exhausted.

Wednesday: Today I started with a short game session from 8-10am. The short game green is huge, so plenty of room for everyone. I was back in the gym at 10.30am and did more work on correcting ways to warm up. It all made me review the way I had done things before. In the afternoon I opted to play the Monastery course to give myself a bit more time on the range practising. It's all beginning to make sense.

Thursday: Back in the Gym first thing in the morning today for some strengthening and conditioning training before a long game session, this time on the Monastery course rather than the range. It was great to practice this way, in real on course situations. Afternoon was the last chance to practice on the Atlantic course before the tournament tomorrow. We are all looking forward to it!

Friday: It was tournament day but the routine was the same: early morning gym S & C session followed by a short game session. I then got to warm up on the range before my tee time. We had an official starter on the first tee and I knew today was where I hoped to perform. My game had come on leaps and bounds this week and I now look at my golf in a different way. I had my best round so far on the Atlantic course! Although it wasn't enough  to win, I did pick up the longest drive at the 18th. Those pressure points are definitely working! The day was topped off with the prize presentation and a fun closing dinner.

Saturday: What a great week!  Tired? Yes! Learned a lot more than I expected? Yes! 5 rounds of golf on a European tour course; 4 specific gym sessions to focus on golf movements; 8 hours golf coaching from top professionals. I have had my swing analysed and assessed and I have a record to take away with me with points to focus on in the future.

On our way to the airport I thought about what I have been through in the last week…One thing for sure is that next time I watch a professional golf event on TV, I'd know exactly what they go through each and every week!
